Overview: MEMBER

MEMBER was an ambitious social app from Berlin-based BrandTURBO, combining WhatsApp-style messaging with event-driven social features. With strong marketing channels, influencer partnerships, and a first-to-market launch strategy, the product team adopted a “let a hundred roses bloom” approach—rapidly adding new features to see what gained traction.

I joined as Product Design Lead and oversaw a full redesign of the app. This included introducing the React Native framework Tamagui to create a scalable foundation, as well as helping ship several then-unique features, from event-based NFTs to early AI chat integrations.

Design Framework & Library

When I joined MEMBER, the product had a bare-bones developer-made design that needed a full overhaul. I began by building a proper design library and planning a staged transition from the old system to the new. We built our library—called Ember—on Tamagui, a React Native framework that uses tokens and flexible themes, which was essential for scalability and future growth. I structured the system to be modular for the same reason.

I worked in Figma using a master library and a master deployment file. New features always started as separate design files where we iterated, refined, and aligned before final approval. Once ready, I added the completed screens to the master file for deployment. Communication remained continuous throughout the process, and a more detailed outline of my general design approach is available here.

Onboarding

Onboarding was one of the first major features we tackled, as introducing new users to MEMBER was critical for long-term engagement. I mapped out complete login and signup flows in FigJam, covering every entry point and edge case. I also created a short introductory video to show how the app connects people from online interactions to real-world events.

Working with business strategy, I refined decisions around usernames, profile photos, age restrictions, and interests. I documented MVP decisions and left detailed implementation notes for developers, ensuring clarity and consistency throughout development.

Barca & AI Chat

Later in MEMBER’s lifecycle, we explored partnership concepts with FC Barcelona, including a feature using the Spotify API (Spotify was a partner) to share the team’s pre-game playlist. Users could tag, remix, and interact with the playlist inside MEMBER as part of a larger community experience.

We also developed early concepts for AI chat using LLMs—this was right as GPT-3 launched—allowing influencers, bands, and musicians to offer tailored chatbot conversations. I designed flows where fans could purchase a ticket through an external app, unlock MEMBER VIP Access, and join exclusive pre-event chats. These concepts attracted strong interest thanks to clear monetization paths, including crypto and Web3 integrations.

Activity Feed

The Activity Feed and Notifications system was one of MEMBER’s most complex features. With multiple user types (Admins, Members), Groups, and Communities—plus social interactions like invites, posts, comments, and approvals—organizing everything into a readable structure required meticulous planning and information architecture.

I designed a long-term system and a focused MVP we could ship quickly and iterate on. Each notification type was given its own clear visual identity while staying consistent with the overall design language, making the feed easy to scan and understand despite its complexity.

New Posts & Uploads

Posting and sharing content was central to MEMBER, so I designed the entire upload and posting system across all entry points—group pages, community pages, the main tab bar, and OS-specific behaviors on iOS and Android. The goal was to make posting feel immediate, intuitive, and consistent no matter where the user started.

The final design featured smooth loading progress states, custom motion graphics I created, and simple re-posting tools. I collaborated closely with developers to ensure the motion and transitions matched the intended interactions.

Website & Feedback

I designed and built the MEMBER corporate website to clearly represent the product and its features while directing visitors quickly to download the app. The site also included materials and messaging to support business development and partnership discussions with investors and collaborators.

Collecting feedback was essential for improving MEMBER, so I worked with stakeholders and department leads to define KPIs and set up tracking through Mixpanel to monitor user behavior. I also built clear feedback loops through WhatsApp, which was an important communication channel for us and for our early user groups.
